Leather Types Explained

Same wallet design, different leather = completely different experience. Here's what you need to know.

Vegetable-Tanned (Veg-Tan)

The gold standard for handmade leather goods. Tanned with natural plant extracts (chestnut, mimosa). Starts pale and stiff, darkens beautifully with use — developing a unique patina over months and years. Italian veg-tan from Tuscany (Buttero, Minerva Box, Pueblo) is our most-used leather. Best for: wallets, belts, card holders, anything you want to age beautifully.

Chrome-Tanned

Tanned with chromium salts. Softer, more flexible, and available in more colors than veg-tan. Does not develop patina. Most commercial bags and wallets use chrome-tan. Best for: soft bags, colorful pieces, items that won't see heavy use.

Shell Cordovan (Horse Rump)

Not from a shell, not from a cordovan cow. It's a dense membrane from a horse's rump. Extremely rare — only two small pieces per horse. Mirror-smooth surface with almost no visible pores. Takes a shine like nothing else. Best for: luxury wallets, watch straps, pieces you want to keep forever.

Crocodile / Alligator

Siamese crocodile (regular belly scales) and Nile crocodile (large square scales) are the premium choices. Every piece is unique — the scale pattern is nature's fingerprint. Best for: luxury small goods, watch straps, statement pieces.

Lizard

Fine, delicate scales. Much lighter than crocodile. The texture resembles lace — particularly beautiful on women's accessories. Best for: watch straps, small wallets, feminine pieces.

Ostrich

Instantly recognizable by the quill follicles (the "dots"). Very soft and pliable, yet surprisingly durable. Best for: bags, large wallets, pieces where texture is the main feature.
