How to Care for Leather Goods
Good leather doesn't need babying. But a few simple habits will add decades to its life.
The Basics (All Leather)
- Keep it dry. If it gets wet, blot with a dry cloth and let it air-dry naturally. Never use a hairdryer or direct heat.
- Store properly. Stuff bags with soft paper to maintain shape. Store in a dust bag in a cool, dry place. Add a silica gel packet in humid climates.
- Avoid direct sunlight for prolonged periods. UV rays dry out and fade leather.
- Clean gently. Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a slightly damp cloth — then dry immediately.
Veg-Tan Leather
Condition every 2-3 months with a small amount of mink oil or neatsfoot oil. Apply sparingly with your fingers, rub in circles, let it absorb overnight. The goal is moisturizing, not soaking. Over-conditioning clogs the pores and prevents natural patina development.
Chrome-Tan Leather
Generally doesn't need conditioning. Wipe clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth. If it feels dry, use a very light leather conditioner — but most chrome-tan pieces never need it.
Exotic Leather (Crocodile, Lizard, Ostrich)
Do not use regular leather conditioner on exotic leather. It can cause scales to lift or lose luster. Use only products specifically formulated for reptile or exotic leather.
What NOT to Do
- Don't use household cleaners, alcohol, or soap
- Don't soak in water
- Don't dry with heat (radiator, hairdryer, direct sun)
- Don't store in plastic bags — leather needs to breathe
- Don't over-condition — once every 2-3 months is plenty
